Christ Gives Light

Indeed Christ is that Light of the world that gives the Light of Truth to all who have ever been born into this world. Indeed also, He gives new life as sons of God to all who, having believed that Light of the Truth of the Gospel, believe on Him and receive Him as their Lord and Savior.

In John 1:9 we read as the apostle John speaks of Jesus Christ:

“That was that true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

Since the beginnings of the Christian faith this verse has rightly been understood in a metaphorical sense as meaning that Jesus Christ, being both God and the Word, as in John 1:1, is the Truth, the very essence of all that is righteousness, justice, mercy, grace, love and holiness. John Phillips’ comment on this verse sums it up rather well:

“The apostle John’s thoughts go back to Jesus. “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” Every man. Every person. All without distinction. All have some light. Those who have received no written revelation have the light of creation and conscience. God gave the Jews the added light of covenant and commandment. Now God has given the world the light of Christ. No one escapes one or another of the sources of light God has made available. The Holy Spirit sees to that. God holds people responsible for the light they have. In lands that have known the full blaze of the light of Christ, people are without excuse.”

We know that the Apostle John was here speaking of Christ metaphorically using the word Light as He had previously referred to Jesus as the Word in the very first verse of this Gospel of John. We know that this Light is the Truth from John 17:17 and that this Truth is the very Bible itself, as also declared in Psalm 119:105.

But science has just recently discovered something that amazingly shows us that, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, John told us that this verse can also be taken literally! Researchers at Northwestern University published an article April 26, 2016 that was reported on The Telegraph website in the UK with the headline Bright Flash of Light Marks Incredible Moment Life Begins When Sperm Meets Egg.

The article began

“Human life begins in bright flash of light as a sperm meets an egg, scientists have shown for the first time, after capturing the astonishing ‘fireworks’ on film.

“An explosion of tiny sparks erupts from the egg at the exact moment of conception.

“Scientists had seen the phenomenon occur in other animals but it is the first time is has been also shown to happen in humans.

“Not only is it an incredible spectacle, highlighting the very moment that a new life begins, the size of the flash can be used to determine the quality of the fertilized egg.

Researchers from Northwestern University, in Chicago, noticed that some of the eggs burn brighter than others, showing that they are more likely to produce a healthy baby.”

The article was based upon and quoted from a study available on the Northwestern University website at:

Though this study did not film the conception in the mother’s womb, it did reveal what happens as conception takes place in the in vitro fertilization process in the lab. It is fascinating to watch, as you can see in this video from their video on Vimeo:

It now appears to be clear that this verse, John 1:9, can have a two-fold meaning.

First, as we have known for nearly 2,000 years, Jesus Christ spiritually lightens every heart and conscience of each individual with the light of truth as we find here and in Romans 1:16-20. Especially note verses 19 and 20. Sadly, most harden their hearts against this Light of Truth, but they all have truth made available to them.

And secondly we see Jesus Christ is that Light that literally lights every single person born into this world,  physically as well. His Light, in and of Himself, is literally as bright as the sun as we see in Revelation 1:12-16 and Revelation 21:22-23; 22:5. We also see this in Matthew 17:2 when Jesus was transfigured in the presence of Peter, James and John. His Light is both literal and metaphorical!

Once again, science has discovered that which was spoken of in the Bible centuries earlier, as in Job 38:16 and the discovery of springs in the depths of the sea which occurred in 1970, at least 3500 years after Job heard God speak the words.

Oh Fellow Christian, Let us Praise the Lord for His Light!

Again, as Professor Teresa Woodruff of Northwestern University exclaimed, we also can exclaim with praise of our great God and Savior, “To see the zinc radiate out in a burst from each human egg was breathtaking.”

Praise the Lord that gives us light in our conscience and through the light of His creation, John 1:9; Psa 19:1-4.

Praise the Lord that gives us light from His word, Psa. 119:130.

Praise the Lord for the Light of His Son that has been given to us, Luke 1:79 and John 8:12.

Praise the Lord for His ever enduring and ever lasting light and glory provided to His people, Isaiah 60:19 and for the peace we have with Him, Romans 5:1.

Praise the Lord for His fullness of Joy that He shares with us as we walk with Him in the Light of His word, 1 John 1:4-10.
